Notes:
The shift from stereotype to human understanding seems to be emerging as a theme here, which answers some of my questions about the issue of stereotype and fetishization in the Leslie subplot (SOME). Nice too, that he articulates this shift in the context of his own southern embarrassment, in his understanding the racist politician Bilbo to have "human bones and dimensions through the papier-mache stock villain from Dixie." A great southern conundrum.
I guess there's a focusing in on an understanding of the humanity of those perceived to be despicable, as he's clearly drawing a comparison between Hoss from the earlier chapter and Bilbo.
p223 in the Vintage paperback -- I love this moment of recognition Stingo has of a repetition of a pattern of argument with Nathan, and how he proceeds with it anyway. How often have we all been there?!
